Charlton Athletic were promoted to the Championship by the beginning of April. The real focus point on League One though has been the rivalry between the Owls and the Blades – United vs. Wednesday.

Will one of the oldest rivalries in football make it into the smelting pot of the Championship next season?

While Wednesday finished the season with three victories on the trot, United could only manage a two 2-2 draws. The battle for the automatic promotion spot has been on the cards since Wednesday found their second wind after the sacking of Gary Megson and the start of the reign of Dave Jones.

The automatic promotion spot was the ultimate goal, and now the Owls are sitting back watching the Blades compete in the League One playoff final against Huddersfield Town this Saturday.

In fact it is likely that both Sheffield teams will be playing Championship football next season. United under Danny Wilson have been formidable opposition this year and even without their star striker, who shall not be named, they should have more than enough firepower in Lee Williamson and Richard Cresswell who have scored 22 goals between them.

The Owls peaked at exactly the right time, while the Blades now have to look back at this season’s derby games as the four most important points they lost – the four points that could have won them automatic promotion – especially the two goals they conceded in the last 10 minutes at Bramall Lane.

No matter what happens on League final weekend, at least one side of The Steel City will be celebrating.
